Plagiarism Plagues the Urban Tulsa Weekly

• By

Posted 11.02.11

The cartoonist David Simpson, formerly of the alternative publication Urban Tulsa Weekly, has admitted to copying the works of another cartoonist (read more here), but he hasn’t indicated just how much he has plagiarized.

Below are most of Simpson’s cartoons that he published with Urban Tulsa Weekly in the past year. Please help us determine which ones may be plagiarized by identifying the original source in the comments. In a follow-up report, we’ll do our best to give you a better understanding of the extent of Simpson’s plagiarism.

A good place to start your comparison is the Jeff MacNelly editorial cartoon archive.

Please contact us at mail@thislandpress.com to report any possible incidents of plagiarism.

I’m pretty sure Image 3 was originally drawn by Pat Oliphant for the Denver Post on August 31, 1972. (See Four More Years, page 162.) Image 12 is also an Oliphant. Image 35 is lifted from Borgman.

Not easy to tell, but it seems as though Simpson cut and pasted (and adjusted) his caricature of the Mayor in a few of his cartoons. Self-plagerism?

Image #23 is swiped from Oliphant’s cartoon of July 22, 1985 (see Between Rock and a Hard Place, page 18).   Image #45 is from Oliphant, too – I haven’t been able to find the original yet, but I couldn’t be more certain.
