THE SHORT SO LONG: Joe Brainard by thislandpress
After graduating from high school, Joe Brainard left Tulsa in search of art and culture and freedom. He ended up moving to New York City in 1960 or ’61 where he met and befriended such literary and artistic icons as Frank O’Hara, Andy Warhol, John Ashbery, the list goes on.
His brother, John Brainard, also an artist, followed Joe to NYC over a decade later. In this segment of the Short So Long, we hear John’s story of learning about his brother’s homosexuality and his thoughts on how place impacts the art you create.
Featured in this segment: a communal reading of Joe Brainard’s poem “Autobiography,” John Brainard reads from Joe’s book I Remember, and a recording of Joe reading “Tuesday, February 18th, 1971,” at the Poetry Project, St. Mark’s Church, New York, March 31, 1971.
