Today, on This Land Live, News Editor Holly Wall interviewed Mary Williams and Mario Williams, the mother-son duo organizing this year’s Juneteenth festival in Tulsa. Juneteenth, celebrated June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in America and has been celebrated in Tulsa for decades. Here, it not only recognizes emancipation, but it also honors the legacy of the historic Greenwood District and the events that happened there during the 1921 Race Riot.
Juneteenth events in Tulsa this year began June 8 and continue June 14-16 and June 19. Information is available at the Juneteenth on Greenwood Facebook page.
