Time is running out to order gifts from online and have them shipped in time to wrap and stuff under the tree, giving you yet another good reason to shop local this Christmas and/or Hanukkah.
To help, the editors at This Land have scoured our favorite local shops (which just happen to also be loyal advertisers) in search of the most interesting, unique, and quirky gift items we could find.
When you shop local, you’re not only supporting small business owners in your community, but you’re also boosting your city’s revenue with your tax dollars. And you’re giving gifts that tell your loved ones: “I care enough about you to buy you something special, unique and one-of-a-kind for Christmas—even if someone else picked it out” as opposed to “I found this on sale at the department store. Three million other people in the world have one just like it.”
Happy shopping and happy holidays!
Dwelling Spaces
119 S. Detroit Ave.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Dwelling Spaces is downtown Tulsa’s most popular gift shop, offering an array of t-shirts, books, home furnishings, local art and other gifts. One of the great things about the store is you’re just as likely to find something special for the kid in your life as you are the adult. Take Cuddle Monsters, for example: They’re sweet, they’re lovable, they’re a little quirky, and they don’t run on batteries. And at about $20, they’re the perfect price—and size—for stuffing into a stocking.
For the art/book/Okie aficionado, check out Oklahoma: A Portrait of America, a coffee table book of Oklahoma images by Libby Bender, Carl Brune, and Scott Raffe, for $50.
Gilcrease Museum
1400 N. Gilcrease Museum Road
Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (days)
Museum gift shops are some of the best-kept secrets when it comes to gift buying, and Gilcrease is great for the American art and history lovers in your life. For $25, you can snag one of these Bill and Traci Rabbit prints. The Rabbits are a father-daughter team of Cherokee artists who use vibrant color, interesting shapes, and intricate patterns in their depictions of Cherokee heritage and history. If you’ve got a little more dough to spend, you can pick up a miniature bronze statue—like this one, “End of the Trail” by James Earle Fraser, for $295. It’s modeled after a larger version he created from plaster, which is on display at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and is easily one of the most recognizable images in the U.S. Other sizes and figures range from $295 to $2,495.
Ziegler’s Art & Frame
6 N. Lewis Ave.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
You may have visited Ziegler’s to fulfill your framing needs, but the store also provides a nice supply of gift items for all occasions, as well as some of the cutest greeting cards we’ve eve seen. For the letter-writer in your life (maybe your great-grandma, who still hasn’t figured out how to use her e-mail), we like these note cards by Tulsa Ink. They’re made by local artist Betty Nodder and feature images of downtown’s Art Deco buildings, city parks, and historical structures. For $15, you get a pack of 10. Ziegler’s also offers framed prints of work by local artists, including this image of Arnie’s Bar by Christopher Westfall for $309.
Tom’s Bicycles
1506 E. 15th St.
Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Bicycles of Tulsa
4733 S. Mingo Road
Hours: Monday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tom’s Bicycles and Bicycles of Tulsa both offer biking gear and accessories, as well as bikes, so you’re bound to find something for the cyclist who already has everything. Take, for example, these bike lights, which range from $30 to $60 and will help keep your rider safe at nighttime. A pair of gloves, priced at $40, will come in handy (ha ha!) during the cold-weather months.
C. Grant
3419 S. Peoria Ave.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
C. Grant is an upscale boutique offering women’s clothing, shoes, accessories and beauty products. We like the Kai fragrance products for bath, body and home, which range in price from $35 to $52. Oprah loves them, so they’ve gotta be good, right? Or, for the woman ready for warmer weather, these adorable Cynthia Vincent wedges for $270 will give her something to look forward to.
Richard Neel Home & Interiors
3742 S. Peoria Ave.
Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Richard Neel isn’t just a place you go when you’re looking to remodel your bathroom or redecorate the den; the store also offers gifts at just about every price point. Take, for instance, these notecards, created by Lindsay Parks from photographs she’s taken. A set of 10 will cost you $25. We also like this burled wood bowl for $80.
Philbrook Museum of Art
2727 S. Rockford Road
Hours: Monday-Wednesday, Friday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Philbrook is a great place to get gifts for kids and adults—and for yourself, too. For the child in your life (or the child-like adult), we like these brightly colored Grimm’s wooden puzzles, which are handcrafted in Germany and range in price from $35 to $130. To inspire creativity, give a LomoKing lomography camera—a 35 mm movie camera, which is “set to revolutionize the analogue landscape forever,” according to its website. The camera costs about $100.
Dog Dish
6502 E. 51st St.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
If you’re one of those people who treat your dogs like people, then you certainly won’t want to forget them during the holidays. Dog Dish offers an array of doggie garments for $24 to $44, as well as beds to keep them cozy and warm for $82 to $300. (Oh, who are we kidding? We know your dogs sleep with you.)
Ranch Acres Wine & Spirits
3324 E. 31st St.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 am.-9 p.m.
If you’ve come to the end of our list and still haven’t found just the right gift for the last person on your list, we suggest buying booze. Everyone loves booze. I you want to go local, you can pick up a six-pack of Marshall’s beer for $8 or a bottle of Girouard Vines’ Tulsa Deco wine for $18. And especially for This Land readers, the folks at Ranch Acres recommend Four Roses bourbon, $65.
