Out of The Blocks—Radio producer Aaron Henkin and electronic musician Wendel Patrick collaborate to document a single city block in Baltimore. Prime eavesdropping, a musical score that uses barber’s clippers, and a reminder that incredible stories are here, right now, in front of us.

AURA: The Chemistry of Sound—This Land’s Radio team was lucky to travel to Chicago for the 2012 Third Coast International Audio Festival. One of our favorite moments in sound came an hour into Paolo Pietropaolo’s presentation. Tune in at about 59:30 (be patient, you have to let the player load), sit back and indulge.

Vatican Criticizes Nuns’ Stance On Social Issues—The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the largest group of Catholic nuns in the US, drew the ire of the Vatican leadership for “serious doctrinal problems.” When the Vatican ordered an archbishop to make some changes to the conference, the nuns turned it into a national debate on the radio. The heat of that debate was expertly captured in this short All Things Considered interview with Melissa Block.

Fresh Air—Before his death in May 2012, children’s author Maurice Sendak was interviewed by Terri Gross. It’s a remarkable hour of radio.

The Blacksmith’s Song—This radio documentary takes you inside the sound garden—and the soul—of blacksmith artist Steve Weis. The show was originally published by the Australia Broadcasting Corporation in 2012 and produced by Hamish Sewell. This half hour goes well with a glass of wine. Or a cup o’ tea.
