R.L. Hedgecoke, a Cherokee/Scots-Irish/Metis-Canadian/English World War II veteran, lives in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He grew up in a dugout during the Dust Bowl, worked as a cotton-picker and rode fence in Boise city and in Colorado, and retired from the Environmental Protection Agency in 1985.
